CVS and Walgreens Plan to Offer Abortion Pills Where Abortion Is Legal
Two major pharmacies will apply to offer abortion pills. This is according to a new Food and Drug Administration regulation.

Walgreens and CVS said that they would seek certification to distribute the pill, mifepristone. This is the first of two drugs used to treat abortion. The new federal law allows any pharmacy to accept prescriptions from certified health care providers and adhere to certain criteria to dispense the pills in its stores or by mail order.

The pharmacy chains didn't give details on when they expect to be able offer the pills. They also did not say whether they would only offer them in-store or by mail order. They stated that they would adhere to laws in all 50 states that prohibit or restrict abortion.

Amy Thibaut spokeswoman for CVS and stated that they plan to apply for certification to dispense mifepristone in legal circumstances.

Fraser Engerman, a Walgreens spokesperson, stated in a statement that they plan to become a program-certified pharmacy. We are currently completing the registration and training of our pharmacists. In addition, we are evaluating our pharmacy network to determine where we typically dispense products with extra F.D.A. These will be dispensed in accordance with state and federal laws.

In the wake of last year's Supreme Court ruling that overturned the federal right of abortion, more than half of US pregnancy terminations are now performed using abortion pills. The pill has become a focal point of political and legal debates as conservative states ban or severely restrict abortion. It is possible that the big chains could be another target in the country's divisive abortion debate.

Although the steps to becoming certified to dispense mifepristone in pharmacies are easy, there are some administrative requirements that must be met. These include designating employees to ensure compliance.

What we consider before using anonymous sources. Do the sources know the information? What’s their motivation for telling us? Have they proved reliable in the past? Can we corroborate the information? Even with these questions satisfied, The Times uses anonymous sources as a last resort. The reporter and at least one editor know the identity of the source.

The most difficult step for chains such as CVS or Walgreens is the requirement that pharmacies keep secret the names of certified health professionals who prescribe mifepristone. This protects their safety and privacy.

CVS, a chain that sells mifepristone, would be prohibited from listing a doctor's name on its companywide database. Instead, it would have to restrict that information to the pharmacy that fills the prescriptions.

The F.D.A. has approved Mifepristone as a medication that blocks the production of a necessary hormone for pregnancy development. The F.D.A. allows Mifepristone to be used within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. However, many clinics and telemedicine providers offer it as an option up to 12 or 13. They can legally take this step because many states allow doctors to use medical discretion to recommend a drug for an "off label" use, provided there is scientific evidence to support that it is safe and effective. The World Health Organization supports medication abortion during 12 weeks of gestation. Studies show that it is safe, effective and legal.

Misoprostol is the second drug in this regimen. It has not been as restricted as mifepristone, and can be used for many medical conditions. It can be obtained easily at pharmacies by following a standard prescription process. Misoprostol is used to cause contractions that can expel pregnancy tissue and is usually taken within 24 to 48 hours of mifepristone.

Mifepristone is approved for abortion. It is approved for abortion. However, it can be used to treat some miscarriages. There may be pressure on pharmacies to also dispense it for this purpose. A citizen petition was filed by dozens of organizations, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and American Medical Association. to help make miscarriages easier with mifepristone.
