Hawaii Volcano Kilauea Erupts Again After Weekslong Pause
One of the most active volcanoes in the world, Kilauea in Hawaii, is back in eruption after an entire month of slack according to scientists.

About the hour of 4:30 p.m. at local time, on the Thursday of this week, an light was seen on the summit of the volcano in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, located on the Big Island of Hawaii, according to a press announcement by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Officials stated that the activity was restricted to a crater at the summit. They will monitor the risks as the eruption continues.

"The opening phases of eruptions are dynamic," the news release noted. "Webcam imagery shows fissures at the base of Halema`uma`u crater generating lava flows on the surface of the crater floor."

Late Thursday evening on Thursday, the lava had covered more than 300 acres authorities said..

The video of the eruption posted of the volcano posted on Hawaii Volcanoes National park's Twitter account displayed the bright orange lava fountain moving swiftly in the initial hour of the eruption. At night glowing lava was visible from various areas of the caldera of the volcano.

The explosive eruption of Thursday occurred a little less then three weeks following the U.S. Geological Survey said that Kilauea and Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano that began to erupt at the beginning of November and for the very first time for more than 40 years, was now eruptions.

At the time, scientists were not sure what the exact timing of the event was accidental or coincidental.

Although the two volcanoes share the same magma supply, officials announced in a separate press announcement on Thursday, that Mauna Loa was not extincting and there was no evidence of eruptions.

"When Mauna Loa is frequently active, Kilauea tends to be less active, and vice versa," Jim Kauahikaua an expert in volcanology with the U.S.G.S. Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, said in the past year, noting that the relationship was speculation given the limited amount of the data that has been collected.

Kilauea has been erupting almost continuously from 1983 to 2018, during which a prolonged eruption created 320,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools of lava, which changed the landscape around it and destroyed 700 homes.
